New Year’s Resolutions
A new year’s resolution as defined by Wikipedia.org is a commitment
that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a
lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. More
simply put, you are unhappy with a certain aspect of your life and you
want to make a change. January first has become a very popular time
to start a resolution as every new year is a new beginning. Who doesn’
t have in their lives something that they would like to do differently, do
better, or simply do without?
Some of the most popular resolutions in America are to spend more
quality time with the family, lose weight, quit smoking, get organized,
get out of debt, eat right, quit drinking, help others, get in shape, save
more money, learn something new and take a trip. These resolutions
go into effect on January first with every intention of success and
remain until they are fulfilled or are abandoned. Surveys have shown
that, and I believe this number to be a bit high, that only 10-12% of
resolutions ever come to fruition. This is because most resolutions
are stated in a very broad sense. For example, “This year I am going to
lose weight!” or “This year I am going to get more projects done
around the house.”
These resolutions are destined for failure from the start. If you want
your resolution to succeed, you need to be more specific as to what
the goal of your resolution is. If you wish to lose weight this year, make
your resolution more focused. “This year I am going to lose a pound a
week by watching what I eat and by gradually increasing my physical
activity” or “This year I am going to fix the leak over the garage and
then fix the dripping faucet in the bathroom.”
Stated in this manner, you have a much greater chance for a
successful resolution. Only one of three major elements remains. You
have two of them already, the desire and the motivation. You desire
and want this for your life and you are motivated and inspired to get it
going. Now you need the commitment to follow it through to
completion. Without this essential third element, your resolution is
doomed to abandonment. You start off on January one giving it all you
have full of determination that you will succeed and as the days and
weeks go by, you find yourself coming up with all kinds of excuses as
to why your resolution was not well founded and why you are going to
fail. Your old habits and way of life creep back in and just like that your
resolution is a thing of the past. It’s much easier for you to carry on
with the same old way of life and be content with your good intentions
but you know that you made your resolution because it’s something
you want and even need to make your life better.
So what’s wrong? Why do we do this? Why do we make promises to
ourselves only to break them and make us feel like failures for even
trying? Each time we fail, we remove ourselves further and further
away from the possibility of ever succeeding. A new year’s resolution
becomes something we just say knowing perfectly well we won’t
actually follow through with it.
This is where hypnosis comes in. You see the problem is that there is
a thought hidden in your subconscious mind. Somewhere in there for
example, an idea or suggestion has been planted and accepted that
you can not lose the weight you want to lose or that you aren’t able to
do the repairs around the house. Through hypnosis, we can replace
these negative thoughts with suggestions that are more positive, more
beneficial suggestions that strengthen your desire and increase your
motivation and empower your commitment so that whatever you
resolve to do within the limits of the reality of your own world, you will
be able to do. You can lose the weight you want to lose and get into
shape, you can quit smoking, you can get organized. Whatever you
desire you can accomplish.
